Hard dry thick skin, different to the colour of the surrounding skin that develops on the foot. Sometimes it is so dry and thick that it begins to crack and breakdown.
Why do I get it?
It is usually in response to some degree of extra pressure – either from footwear or malignment of the bones of the foot. It can crack because of where it is too eg a high pressure area like the heel.
What can be done by a Podiatrist?
It needs assessing to confirm it is a true callus. Carefully skilled sharp debridement with a scalpel is a good starting point and gives good immediate pain relief if done well. There needs to be some additional discussion & investigation as to the cause and so a long term solution can be found.
